In the Uncomfortable Days

Updated: Aug 18, 2024

In the uncomfortable days and moments, is where growth happens. Every time I felt the urge to sit back into my caccoon or hide under my shell, the more I felt inclined to move beyond the uncomfortable moments and grow beyond it.

Two bold moves I've made where I was responding with resistance was working in another state and then a year later taking a leadership role.

I recall telling my then supervisor and confidont to leave me alone, give me space and let me give the move to NY some thought. The main thing I learned here was to listen to myself, which was in the end the right thing for me to do. During this space, I spoke to others who ventured into commuting to NY while living in NJ and did a dry run to figure out how I'd do it. I also thought about the major expense to drive to NY and the two hour commute back and forth. Although these were the sacrifices I chose to make, I made the best of it. I used the time in the car to make phone calls and manage my volunteer role of vice president to an the EBRG for the Hispanic Society as well as catch up with friends.

My supervisor, however, gave me the push I needed to see beyond what I was doing now. Without her guidance and advocacy, I would have been lost.

In retrospect, I enjoyed the adventure driving over the two bridges daily for a year, gained the knowledge and confidence to keep going. Within this role, everything and anything that could happened did and I am so thankful for that experience and the people I met there. Little did I know it was the prep I needed for my next career move.
